Prom night signifies the end of the school year and the last few weeks before summer. It’s a night that students look forward to their entire high school career. From the gowns and tuxes to the corsages and photos, students go above and beyond to look their best, thinking of every last detail to make the night memorable. But, is preparing for everything really possible? According to MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, teen alcohol use kills 4,700 people each year and 90% of teens believe their peers are more likely to drink and drive on prom night. While it may take a backseat to all of the glam around the night’s festivities, knowing how to stay safe on the roads can make the difference between a night you never want to forget and a tragedy that will forever stay in your mind. In an effort to keep the roads in our community safe during this exciting time of year, United Tire is serving as an advocate for safe and focused driving. Our team has built a list of tips that can help make the community’s prom night one we all want to remember!
Limit the number of passengers in the car
A packed car may very well seem like the party before the party, but the added distractions could risk arriving to the event safely, especially for new drivers. In accordance with section 4581 of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, it is a law in Pennsylvania that if you are a driver under the age of 18, the number of passengers may not exceed the number of seat belts in the vehicle.
Insist everyone wear a seatbelt.
Not that we want to see your beautiful dresses get mussed up but, you are required by law to buckle up. CLICK IT OR TICKET!
If you are the driver, put down your phone!
As exciting as the night may be, the texts, pictures, and snapchats can wait! Leave your phone in the hands of your co-pilot to capture the excitement of the night. Not only is texting/snapchatting while driving dangerous, it’s against the law!
Keep a charger in your car
Between the selfies, social media, and texting, we all know how fast our batteries can drain. In the case of an emergency, it is important to be able to call for help. By keeping a car charger handy, you can keep your phone alive.
Bring a pair of comfortable shoes for driving
Heels and dress shoes can be slippery, especially if they are new. Bring along a pair of sandals or sneakers for the ride. You’ll have more traction against the pedals and you will feel more comfortable post prom after all that dancing!
Know when to call for a ride if you are impaired
Drinking under the age of 21 is illegal. In the event that you or your peers decide to ignore this standard, do not put yourself or others in danger. The consequences of “getting in trouble” are not nearly as severe as the danger of getting behind the wheel or driving with someone who is intoxicated. Not only are you putting your life in danger, you are risking the lives of other innocent drivers on the road. It’s NOT worth it. There are other options; call a family member, talk to a supervisor at the event or use apps, like Uber or Lyft that are available in your area. Make this event a night to always remember! By taking the pledge to Drive United, you are committed to keeping our local roads safe for the entire community. Interested in the opportunity to drive safe and arrive in style this prom season.
